Israel To Reach Population Milestone In 2024
Israel is expected to reach a population milestone in 2024, surpassing 10 million people.
According to data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics in Israel (CBS), the country’s population grew by 1.9% in 2023, reaching 9.8 million at the close of the year.
According to the CBS, 179,000 new names were added to Israel’s population registry during 2023. Births accounted for 72% of these. 25% (around 45,000 people) were new immigrants, with 3% (around 7,000 people) attributed to family reunification. The CBS noted that 78.6% of the 2023 immigrants originated from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Of Israel’s 9.8 million population, 73.2% are Jewish and 21.1% Arab. The remaining 5.7% identify as members of other minorities, including the Bedouin, Druze and Circassian communities, as well as Eastern Orthodox Christians of Assyrian and Armenian descent.
Current estimates indicate that Israel’s population will grow by a further 1 million by 2030.
At the time of writing, the population of Israel sits at approximately 9.842 million, more than a ten-fold increase from 1948 when the state of Israel was founded. The fertility rate (average number of births per mother) is currently at 2.89.
