Population Of Uzbekistan Approaches 37 Million
The population of Uzbekistan has reached almost 37 million people.
According to figures released by the Statistics Agency of Uzbekistan, the country’s population reached 36,799,756 people at the start of 2024, a growth of 2.2% compared to the beginning of 2023.
In 2023, Uzbekistan’s population increased by 774,800 people. This represents an average monthly increase of 64,600 and an average daily increase of 2,100 people.
Agency figures indicate that 968,140 children were born in Uzbekistan in 2023, which is 28,360 more children than in 2022. The total number of girls was 501,577 and the number of boys 466,563.
The Agency also noted an increasing swing towards urbanisation, with 18.8 million people now living in urban areas and 18 million in rural areas.
Tashkent, the country’s capital, is the largest and most populated city in Central Asia, home to 3.4 million people.
The government of Uzbekistan has come under considerable fire in recent years over declining air quality in the capital. In recent weeks, Tashkent has been ranked among the 10 most polluted cities in the world, with vehicle emissions and construction considered the primary causes.
On two separate days in December 2023, the AQI in Tashkent for PM2.5 – a hazardous air pollutant known as Particulate Matter 2.5 – stood at 273 and 284 respectively. These figures far exceed air quality limits set by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Exacerbating the problem, overpopulation in Tashkent has also resulted in swathes of green space being lost to new development. Despite a presidential moratorium, it is estimated that 49,000 trees have been felled in the capital since 2019, mostly by real estate developers undaunted by paltry fines.
At the time of writing, the population of Uzbekistan sits at approximately 36.8 million, a 48 per cent increase since 2000. The fertility rate (average number of births per mother) is currently at 2.71.
